🇨🇳 MICHAEL FREMER | WILSON BENESCH GUEST IN CHINA

For the first time in his distinguished career, internationally renowned analogue audio journalist Michael Fremer will travel to China, joining Wilson Benesch co-founder and Design Director Craig Milnes as a special guest for the official Chinese launch of the Greenwich Turntable, hosted by Purist Audio in Shanghai.

One of the most influential voices in analogue audio, Michael is Editor of TrackingAngle.com, host of the TrackingAngle YouTube channel and Editor-at-Large at The Absolute Sound. His extensive career includes senior editorial positions at Stereophile and AnalogPlanet.com, alongside his earlier work as Editor and Co-owner of the award-winning print magazine Tracking Angle.

Beyond high-end audio journalism, Michael’s remarkable career spans broadcasting, film and entertainment. He supervised the Academy Award-nominated soundtrack to Disney’s 1982 film TRON and contributed writing and voice performances to the animated feature Animalympics, alongside Harry Shearer, Gilda Radner and Billy Crystal.

His appearances across American television and radio, together with decades of writing and advocacy for analogue reproduction, have made him a prominent voice in the resurgence of vinyl records.

Michael’s extensive knowledge of the Wilson Benesch GMT® Collection adds another dimension to his visit. Having conducted the world-première review of the flagship GMT One System for The Absolute Sound, he subsequently became an owner of the Prime Meridian Turntable, which he uses in his personal reference reviewing system.

His first visit to China represents a rare opportunity for Chinese audiophiles to meet one of the industry’s most experienced independent commentators, hear his perspectives on analogue reproduction and join him and Craig Milnes for the launch of Greenwich.

We look forward to welcoming Michael to Shanghai alongside our distribution partner Purist Audio.

Forget the usual hifi demo. This weekend at Dutch Audio Event, Rhapsody has turned Room 47 (Rode zone) into something closer to a late-night jazz club than a trade-show booth.

Wilson Benesch Resolution 3zero speakers, paired with the IGx Infrasonic Generator, deliver that rare combination of effortless scale, lightning-fast dynamics, and deep, physical bass that you feel as much as hear. Driven by True Life Audio amplification, with both vinyl (Döhmann / Thiele) and digital (Pink Faun) sources in the mix, the result is pure musical immersion rather than product showcasing.

Harry and Michael have built something special here — an experience. If you’re at DAE 2026 today, head to Kamer 47 before it closes.

// The last operations: the OMEGA Drive chassis is finished //

The final precision CNC operations on the latest batch of OMEGA Drive chassis.

Hewn from a solid aluminium billet, hundreds of thousands of lines of code and multiple operations later, one OMEGA Drive chassis is finished. This batch will now be prepared and sent for specialist finishing. Twenty-one precision-wound copper coils, a PCB and the stator are then assembled by hand into the chassis. From there it is built into the next GMT One, Prime Meridian and Greenwich turntables, destined for customers across the world.

Visible here: the last chamfer on the edges of the chassis, followed by piloting and threading holes that fix in place the steel stator ring.

// From solid aluminium billet to the heart of the GMT Collection //

Another series of OMEGA Drive chassis is taking shape at the Wilson Benesch factory in Sheffield, England.

What begins as an imposing block of solid aluminium is progressively transformed through precision CNC machining into the highly complex structure seen here. Much of the original material is removed as the radial architecture of the OMEGA Drive emerges — an architecture developed specifically around one of the most fundamental challenges in analogue replay: the precise and controlled rotation of the record.

The OMEGA Drive is not a conventional turntable motor. Measuring 381 mm — 15 inches — in diameter, it is a three-phase, slotless, coreless synchronous direct-drive motor. Twenty-one precision-wound coils interact with fourteen neodymium magnets around its circumference, distributing the driving force across an exceptionally large diameter.

This architecture eliminates the iron cores and slots responsible for cogging in conventional motor designs and allows the drive system to deliver exceptionally smooth rotational torque.

The engineering extends far beyond the motor itself. Once assembled with its coils, stator and spindle, this chassis becomes a substantial 14 kg mechanical structure at the centre of the turntable.

Developed in Sheffield and manufactured here at Wilson Benesch, the OMEGA Drive is the common technological foundation of every turntable in the GMT Collection — from Greenwich and Prime Meridian to the reference GMT One.

These photographs capture an unusually revealing stage of that process: before the finishes, before assembly and before the turntable — when the engineering is still visible in the metal.

The Wilson Benesch Omnium and IGx Infrasonic Generator — installed in China by our distribution partner, Purist Audio.

The Omnium represents more than three decades of research and development at Wilson Benesch, bringing together advanced carbon fibre composite structures, proprietary drive technology and precision manufacturing at our facility in Sheffield, England.

Writing for The Absolute Sound, Robert Harley described the Omnium and IGx combination:

“The speaker had an amazing dynamic coherence from top to bottom, giving the impression that it has vanished from the playback chain.”

On the contribution of the IGx:
“The IGx blended with the Omnium absolutely seamlessly, making the entire speaker system sound ‘of a piece’ to a degree I haven’t heard from other four-piece speaker systems. The IGx is very subtle sonically, but the musical effect is profound.”

Our thanks to Purist Audio for the installation and photographs.
