It has re-defined the way that analogue will evolve in the next century and eloquently re-affirms the long term viability of the format. The solution is comprised of three State of the art components, the Circle turntable, A.C.T. 0.5 tonearm and Ply moving coil carbon fibre bodied cartridge.

With a set up time of less than one hour, the complete product requires no “tuning” and will remain stable and reliable indefinitely.

Wilson Benesch is the world’s foremost authority on the use and function of advanced composite structures when applied in audio systems. Over ten years of research and development lie behind this imaginative and unique product.

As a complete solution it is a landmark product, however, the modular design framework elevates its value above and beyond the conventional.

Whilst conventional materials technology can be seen as the norm, in the Wilson Benesch range the principle structures are all manufactured from solid carbon fibre.

The Wilson Benesch Carbon is a unique and innovative product. It is manufactured to exacting tolerances from the finest and most advanced materials.

By inhibiting the principle agents of distortion detectable in metal based cartridges, the Carbon excels in all aspects of reproduction.

The high modulus self damping, machined and press moulded carbon fibre components are quite unique in their capacity to liberate the cartridge from the effects of material borne resonance.

The ACT Two provides all the technically proven virtues of the ACT 0.5 but in a more refined package.

The ACT Two is further testimony to our single minded commitment to the analogue medium and is a worthy addition to the Wilson Benesch product range.

Wilson Benesch Ltd was the first company in the world to produce a fully moulded, single component arm tube. Torsionally it is typically ten times stiffer than conventional arm tubes.

It is three times stiffer in bending and an order of magnitude better at damping audio frequencies.

Carbon fibre is unquestionably ideal for this function. The structure is formed from two contra rotating helixes of pure carbon fibre, much the same as some of the most effective natural structures which have benefited from millions of years of design refinements. The shape of the beam is also quite natural as it has been determined precisely by its function and physical limits, rather than by the crudities of a manufacturing process as in the case of metals or ceramics. As a result, material use is exact and exists only where it is required. It should be noted that this is quite different from the mass produced straight carbon fibre tubes being used in other designs.

The performance of the carbon beam is matched by the equally effective and equally unique Kinematic bearing. The combined function of the bearing and counterbalance provides the ideal mechanism for a tonearm movement. The benefits of this technology for the end user are significant. All aspects of reproduction are improved as the cartridge is provided with the opportunity for the first time to do its job without being heavily influenced by the function of the system designed to support it.

There are three key factors in the design of the tube of any tonearm:~

1. The form of the tube: Based on natures’ rules Hyperbolic form

2. The stiffness of the tube: Strength facts, compare Magnesium 275 MPa to Nano carbon 62,300 MPa

3. The damping capabilities of the tube: Anisotropic materials like carbon fibre direct energy and exhibit high levels of damping perpendicular to the fibre. Carbon fibre is vastly superior to metal structures that propagate energy in all directions very efficiently.

The Nanotube is second to none by several orders of magnitude.
It is the most advanced manifestation of the tonerm tube ever created.

For those of you who have maintained an eye on the Wilson Benesch News Page over the last five years, you will be keenly aware of the companies diverse collaborations. In financial, visual, scientific and almost every other aspect of Wilson Benesch’s operations, you will see that it is aided and enhanced by experts in their respective field. Our established collaborations was one of the key factors in our successful application to Europe for further funding for the Mondrian Project.

Although it is rewarding to see more and more analogue products being assembled with carbon fibre add ons that endorse our original artwork of twenty years ago, we have avoided adding to the extensive list of analogue component designs. Moreover, we don’t intend to add to this list. What is being conceived is completely original in concept, execution and function. The need to create a new solution came into sharp focus when the company started manufacturing wide bandwidth loudspeaker systems. This is the point where the need for a super resolution source component became a critical concern. In many ways then, it is the Torus and the Trinity that prompted the company to realise a new Wilson Benesch answer.

With financial support in place, twelve months on we can report that we have overcome some significant technological challenges. There is still a lot of hard work to be done, but at this point we are highly confident that the final outcome of this ambitious project will clearly demonstrate the known potential of vinyl and the Wilson Benesch Wide Bandwidth loudspeaker systems. No, it will not have the world’s heaviest platter, nor will it be the world’s most expensive. It will however include work from a number of intellectuals from varied disciplines and will demonstrate once again that real progress is made through collaboration.

We look forward to publishing some of the patent applications and illustrating some of the results of this work during the autumn.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our 20th anniversary show this year. First of all Darren Smith of Clearer Audio who provided all the cables and was in attendance throughout, taking all those difficult questions about cables. Yamaha for source components and Projection Design for the considerable attention to detail afforded the fantastic projection system this year. Adrian and Robert for their reliable contributions. Thanks of course go to the organisers, Jerry and Tony for the best show in the U.K. by far. Finally, thanks to everyone who visited, provided feedback and made comments on blogs.

As you can see from the images we featured a blend of old and new at this years event. One of the very first Wilson Benesch turntables was used as principle source to play records from as far back as 1957 to present day, much to the appreciation of all who heard. The Nanotube One tonearm was used on the turntable. The A.C.T. C.60 made its debut in the Limited Edition version alongside one of the first A.C.T. One’s from 15 years ago.

Every year this event seems to go from strength to strength. We enjoyed the highest number of visitors to date this year. So we look forward to making the next event even better and planning has already started.

Audionet Electronics were of course deployed throughout and served in the usual purposeful and reliable way. On the main system the very latest Pre-power combination was fast and effortless. The Cinema relied upon one Seven channel amplifier.
<a " href="http://www.wilson-benesch.com/uploaded_images/7-702179.jpg">
<a " href="http://www.wilson-benesch.com/uploaded_images/1-780208.jpg">
<a " href="http://www.wilson-benesch.com/uploaded_images/3-788736.jpg">
<a " href="http://www.wilson-benesch.com/uploaded_images/2-788714.jpg">
<a " href="http://www.wilson-benesch.com/uploaded_images/4-740451.jpg">
<a " href="http://www.wilson-benesch.com/uploaded_images/6-702165.jpg">
<a " href="http://www.wilson-benesch.com/uploaded_images/5-740479.jpg">

The Bristol Show. Conservatory.
2009 marks the 20th Anniversary Year for Wilson Benesch. 20 years of solid research and passionate development has earned the company an enviable global reputation. With some pride the directors would like to invite you to join us in taking a retrospective look back at some of the milestones and original ideas that have charted the progress of one of Britain’s most innovative, manufacturing companies.

As part of the retrospective, the modest, sublimely beautiful, classic Wilson Benesch Turntable will be used as one of the source components in this years two channel system.

The retrospective will form part of active demonstrations that will feature two systems all of which will be driven by Audionet, connected by Clearer Audio and augmented by the patented technology of the Torus Infrasonic Generator. Darren Smith of Clearer Audio will be attending the whole show and we are also grateful to other supporting companies for the Cinema system that will be based around a Yamaha Blue Ray source with Projection Design delivering all the required visual display systems.

System 1.
The two channel system will be defined by the world’s most advanced loudspeaker technology. The construction of the A.C.T. C.60 more closely resembles the Typhoon Eurofighter than a conventional wooden loudspeaker. Launched in 2008 at the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix this will be the first showing in the U.K. of this ground breaking, wide bandwidth (18 100KHz) benchmark in performance. The source components for this system will also include the companies very first design, the Wilson Benesch Turntable. A design that still delivers reference quality performance, 20 years after it was first built. This particular system has been used to voice every loudspeaker design. Its timeless, elegant, understated lines look as contemporary to day as they did when it was first released. Some of the elements of this design will be on display as part of our retrospective.

System 2.
The multi channel system will be defined by the outstanding Square Series. Here is what WHAT HI-FI had to say about these Five star, Group Test winners.

“These speakers are faster than fast
To paraphrase Lightning McQueen (the animated hero in Pixar’s Cars), “these Wilson Benesch speakers are faster than fast“ they are speed. We’ve only heard a handful of speakers that come close to the Square Two’s almost supernatural ability to respond to the leading edge of notes.”

We truly believe the Wilson Benesch Square Two’s deliver the finest sounds available at this price, and you have to spend a lot more to better them.

We look forward demonstrating why nothing comes close to a Wilson Benesch.

EUROPEAN SUPPORT TO FUND PURE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT.

Extract from press Release.
“Almost exactly twenty years ago, at a time when everyone was claiming vinyl was dead, Wilson Benesch a company that did not even officially exist, stood out against the tide of opinion and began work on what would be called the Wilson Benesch turntable. After a successful application for Innovation Grant Support, work began on the turntable that would become “Reference System” in many magazines. Today we are delighted to be able to announce the start of the Mondrian Project a £146,000 pure research project to explore potential ideas for a radical analogue replay system. This funding will provide the opportunity to explore avenues that would be impossible otherwise. It underlines our commitment both to analogue replay and real innovation.

Ever since the Wilson Benesch Turntable became impossible to make more than a decade ago, the company has resisted pressure to release another turntable system after the Circle. Does the world really need another re-hashed design with a huge price tag?

Although we have been conceptualising potential ideas for over a decade, to attempt to literally reinvent something is quite ambitious. The design ideas in the Mondrian Project are extremely exciting despite being risky, time consuming, costly and demanding upon staff. Fortunately as a result of recent important developments outside Wilson Benesch, our confidence in the potential success of this work has been bolstered. Further announcements on this matter will be released during the course of next week.

The Mondrian Project will require a lot of three dimensional design. Many of the design concepts will need to be proven and will then require quite sophisticated manufacturing techniques. There will be a high dependence upon our current extensive knowledge of carbon fibre composites and other exotic materials. We also know of new technolgies that will be part of the final design. The first patent application has already been filed and we expect there to be more written before the end of the eighteen month project which began in June this year.

With some pride we can claim to have built a design heritage that is about bringing something new to the market that goes beyond what was previously possible. With this additional support, we are in the best possible position to push back the limitations of today’s technologies. It is very exciting to think, that in 2009, our 20th anniversary year, we might see some of the first results from the Mondrian Project that will then feed in to product development.”
