Munich High End Preview 2016

Wilson Benesch - A.C.T. P1 - Geometry Series - Carbon Fibre Loudspeaker - Munich High End 2016 - Luxury - High End Audio - British Innovation

Wilson Benesch are delighted to announce our return to the Munich, for the 2016 edition of the finest show high end audio exhibition on the planet, the Munich High End. Staged in the MOC Messe Exhibition Centre, 20-minutes from the vibrant heart of Munich, the Munich High End is widely recognised as the finest exhibition of audio the world over attracting a global audience and roster of top audio designers and manufacturers. Wilson Benesch traditionally reserve something exceptional for Munich, in previous years the company has launched its luxury flagship loudspeaker, Cardinal, its ‘Super-Monitor’ Endeavour loudspeaker and this year we have a very special addition to our reference marque, Geometry Series. Our full press release for this years show will leave our HQ the week prior to the exhibition, this will include full details of the new ‘P1’ project. You can stay up to date on this via our social media feeds and of course via our newsletter.

A.C.T. One Evolution ‘P1’: A Revolution in Carbon Fibre
Wilson Benesch pioneered the use of carbon fibre composites in high end audio in 1989. Since then, the company has consistently engineered and manufactured a range of bespoke, hand crafted products using carbon fibre composites.

Science has always been at the foundation of every product realised using carbon fibre composites. The tapered geometric form seen in the original A.C.T. One Tonearm was used to extract maximum stiffness and damping from the form whilst reducing its weight as much as possible. The curved u-section seen in the A.C.T. Monocoque in the companies reference line of loudspeakers, the Geometry Series, is another example of how the form of the component has been engineered to maximise the performance of the product, reducing the number of flat surfaces on the loudspeakers chassis and giving the loudspeaker the stiffest and most highly damped cabinet of any loudspeaker in the world. At no point has the company used carbon composites purely on the basis of its aesthetics or to gain a marketing advantage by way of its association with high performance.

Munich High End 2016 will mark the arrival of something revolutionary. An advance in carbon fibre technology, pioneered by the industries leading proponents of carbon fibre composites in high end audio. See it for the first time in Munich.

Discovery II: Reinventing A Classic
Wilson Benesch - Discovery II - Standmount - Loudspeaker - Carbon Fibre Composite - Bristol - Sound & Vision - 2016
Following the launch of the A.C.T. One Evolution in 2015, Wilson Benesch will this year bring another timeless, thoroughbred classic into its current reference line, with the Munich premier of the Discovery II Loudspeaker.

Originally launched as the first product in Wilson Benesch’s award winning Odyssey Range in 2001, the Discovery went to world wide critical acclaim. Winning ‘Component of the Year’ in Stereo Sound Japan in 2001, ‘Product of the Year’ in HiFi Review Hong Kong in 2001 and following a 5-star review in What HiFi? UK, it formed the magazines ‘Reference System’ in 2004 and again in 2005.

The principle drive unit topology of the Discovery II remains a unique approach to stand mount speaker design, placing the innovative clamshell Isobaric Drive System in the underside of the enclosure with the Wilson Benesch Semisphere Tweeter and dedicated Tactic II midrange drive unit sitting in close proximity directly above.

This compact and highly optimised drive unit topology delivers a captivating soundstage, rich with dynamic bass that is perfectly integrated with the frequencies across the range up to 30kHz. The unusual character of the sound from the original Discovery won the hearts and minds of music lovers across the globe, garnering an almost cult following of audiophiles. Now in 2016, the design returns with even more power, control and bandwidth.

System Architecture
This year Wilson Benesch are delighted to announce that we will be partnering with our German importer IBEX Audio. The company has an excellent reputation for delivering high quality audio products from across the world of high end audio. Courtesy of IBEX Audio, Wilson Benesch loudspeakers will be partnered with amplification from Viva Audio and cables from Way Cables.

Viva Audio was founded by Amedeo Schembri in 1996. Together with his brother, Giampietro, Amedeo has set out to develop audio systems that can reproduce sound with life-like authenticity.
Viva Audio - Aurora Tube Amplifier - Munich High End 2016 - Wilson Benesch - Discovery II Loudspeaker - IBEX Audio
Viva Audio will partner their highly rated reference single-ended tube amplifier, Aurora, with the Discovery II in Munich. The amplifier has been designed to deliver maximum musical articulation and harmonics. Aurora delivers very stiff, yet fast power supply that responds effortlessly to the most demanding music and overcomes some of the challenges that single-ended amplifier designs often encounter.

Way Cables will supply their ‘Silver 4’ reference cables throughout the system. Founded in Belgrade, Serbia, the company is a relative newcomer to the HiFi industry. But it is already forming an excellent reputation for itself. The company will provide all interconnect, power cables and loudspeaker cables for the demonstration. Wilson Benesch Geometry Series Easter Show Report, Hilversum, Holland

A.C.T. One Evolution - Loudspeaker - Carbon Fibre - British - Engineering - Innovation - HIFI- Holland - Beter Beeld & GeluidThe Wilson Benesch Easter Show from March 26 to Better Sound & Vision in Hilversum was an auditory feast! All three sets played the stars from the sky. It is very special to experience real musical magic, track after track …

Feedback from one customer to our Dutch import partners Audio Ingang was as follows,

Again, thanks and my compliments to the show you put on this afternoon! I am still completely baffled, especially with the second setup. These floorstanding speakers [WB A.C.T. One Evolution] were playing incredibly beautiful together with the Devialet [400] and Crystal Cable loudspeaker cables. Whatever you played, it all sounded so fantastic, so harmonically correct and organic… This also counted for the vocals – extremely beautiful and natural! In the past, there was a time I was listening to English polyphonic choir music almost exclusively, so I have developed an acute sensibility to this genre. Most of the time you are hearing a reproduction, but this time it completely came across like reality…. Great class!

Wilson Benesch would like to thank Audio Ingang for arranging and running this exceptional Easter feast.

Wilson Benesch Geometry series ‘Easter show’
Saturday 26th of March – Beter Beeld & Geluid Hilversum

Just before Easter, Beter Beeld & Geluid will be presenting the newest Wilson Benesch models from the Geometry Series: the Endeavour, A.C.T. One Evolution and Discovery II.

With these models, Wilson Benesch is producing an impressive line of loudspeakers, using most modern production techniques. About 95% of the loudspeakers is made ‘in house’: from the loudspeaker drivers used to the binding posts. Because of this, the manufacturer is able to make design without any compromise and make sure all parts are maximally tuned for their purpose: essentially to guarantee a ‘state-of-the-art’ result.
Endeavour - A.C.T. One Evolution - Discovery II - Loudspeaker - Carbon Fibre - British - Engineering - Innovation - HIFI

The sound of the Geometry Series is one of musicality, natural tone and an open soundstage: rich, flowing tonal colours combine with silky, but very open highs and mids. The speed in the low frequency range and the total absence of colouration from the extremely stiff carbon cabinets gives unmatched resolution: not a simple detail eludes these speakers! The sound stage is enormous, but also precise. Simply not using any filtering in the midrange enables Wilson Benesch to preserve energy in the music signal, for maximum dynamics.

The three models will be driven by electronics from CH Precision and Linn. Experience the Wilson Benesch sound in our Hilversum shop on Saturday afternoon 26th of March from 1 PM. Entrance is free of course and drinks and food will be served afterwards.

Bristol Sound & Vision 2016 Show Report

Wilson Benesch - A.C.T. One Evolution - Discovery II - Loudspeaker - Circle 25 Turntable - CH Precision - Audio Alchemy - DS Audio - Nightrider - Optical Cartridge
Wilson Benesch present to a packed Bristol Sound & Vision 2016
Last years show report opened with a comment on the sheer volume of people attending the Bristol Sound & Vision. Whilst we do not have any official figures from the organisers yet as to the number of customers attending this year, we cannot recall another year as busy as 2016. In addition, we were very pleased to meet with so many people with genuine enthusiasm for the presentation and products on demonstration this year.

As with last year we stuck to a demonstration based around two distinctly different systems, one built around the new floor standing A.C.T. One Evolution loudspeaker and the other around the new Discovery II stand mount loudspeaker. Right through the chain there was somewhat stark contrasts, the A.C.T. One Evolution being partnered with the Swiss ultra high-end CH Precision electronics and the Discovery II being partnered with the very affordable Audio Alchemy products of Californian origin. Yet despite this, both systems on any grounds sounded utterly astonishing.

A.C.T. One Evolution & CH Precision
Wilson Benesch - A.C.T. One Evolution - CH Precision - P1 - A1 - C1 - Phono Stage - R1 - Carbon Fibre - HiFi Rack

Following Hans Zimmers ‘The Battle’ taken from the Gladiator OST and replayed through the A.C.T. One Evolution’s, one customer quietly commented that he was a musician that had been part of an orchestra that had performed this exact piece hundreds upon hundreds of times and he had himself listened to the recording in his own system many times and yet he said there were things in that demonstration that I had never heard before. He had the look of almost giddy euphoria, like an epiphany had arrived. It was a special moment.

In many ways, this kind of performance has come to be expected from the CH Precision – Wilson Benesch combination. Having partnered with CH Precision, importing the product into the UK, it is something that we have become accustomed to. High-end audio of this kind is very special. The A.C.T. One Evolution was always going to be a speaker that excelled with the A1 Amplifiers, the synergy of these systems is well documented and this kind of system is replicated across the globe for this reason. Something very special, but also the preserve of the very few who can afford it.

Discovery II & Audio Alchemy
Wilson Benesch - Discovery II - Audio Alchemy - DDP-1 - DPA-1M - PS-5 - Carbon Fibre - Circle 25 Turntable - DS Audio - Optical Cartridge - Nightrider
So perhaps the defining elements of this years exhibition that many including ourselves had perhaps not expected was the success of the partnership of the new Discovery II and the Audio Alchemy. Prior to the exhibition, we had listened to the Audio Alchemy in our demonstration spaces and like many others we had read the exceptional reviews and show reports which all identified that this was a remarkable product at a remarkable price. But setting up a system in the Conservatory each year teaches you new things about your own products and those partnered with them. This year Audio Alchemy was a lesson in affordable high end audio!

Peter Madnick, the affable designer and director of Audio Alchemy was on hand throughout the exhibition. His selection of digital content consistently impressed customers listening to the system. Something very special, and the preserve of many many more.

Analogue Heaven
Wilson Benesch - Discovery II - Audio Alchemy - DDP-1 - DPA-1M - PS-5 - Carbon Fibre - Circle 25 Turntable - DS Audio - Optical Cartridge - Nightrider
Wilson Benesch presented the Circle 25 Turntable in both the Black Edition and the White Edition this year. Running the Nanotube One and Carbon Cartridge with the CH Precision P1 Phono Stage and the A.C.T. 25 Tonearm with the DS Audio DS-W1 ‘Nightrider’ Optical Cartridge on the Discovery II.

Again it was an extremely interesting contrast of technology and design. One system running a more traditional MC cartridge, with the other running the world’s first optical cartridge which defies any tradition. Unquestionably a phenomenal demonstration of analogue on both counts, but each with a quite distinct and different presentation.

Naturally the DS Audio DS-W1 caught the attention of many, such is the unique nature of the design. Many people left the room with a wide smile having heard the world’s first optical cartridge on the end of a carbon fibre composite tonearm.

In closing
An exceptional show on any grounds and under any criteria a major success. Our first thanks must therefore be to the show organisers Audio T, who have put together the country’s finest audio exhibition. An exhibition would not be complete without people and we would like to extend our thanks to all those who visited us this year in the Wilson Benesch ‘Glass House’. Finally we must make a special thanks to each of those partners that joined us this year in what was a collaborative exhibition space. Peter Madnick of Audio Alchemy and Nigel Crump of Symmetry Systems who import this product. Raphael Pasche of CH Precision who joined us for a second consecutive year. A note also to DS Audio and UK importer Sound Fowndations. And finally to Darren Smith the Director and Designer at Clearer Audio Cables, without whom this exhibition would not have been possible.

See you next time,

All the Team at Wilson Benesch!

Wilson Benesch - Geometry Series - Sound & Vision The Bristol Show 2016 - A.C.T. One Evolution Loudspeaker - Discovery II Loudspeaker - HIFI - High End Audio

Wilson Benesch return to ‘Sound & Vision’ The Bristol Show with two new stunning loudspeaker designs in its Reference Line, Geometry Series.
And as usual we have brought together some of the finest designs from across the world of high end audio to join in on the launch of these two loudspeakers. Read on to find out a little more about the components that will be used in the ‘Wilson Benesch Glass House’ this year.

Discovery II Stand Mount Loudspeaker
Wilson Benesch - Discovery II - Standmount - Loudspeaker - Carbon Fibre Composite - Bristol - Sound & Vision - 2016

A 2.5-way design constructed from carbon fibre composite and precision CNC-machined alloy. The new Discovery II features the company’s very latest Geometry Series drive unit technology, deployed in a unique, compact topology. The innovative clamshell Isobaric Drive System sits underside of the enclosure with a tweeter and dedicated midrange unit sitting directly above. The combination of Isobaric Drive and the proximity of all drive units, allows the Discovery II to deliver a sound like no other loudspeaker. The soundstage is fundamentally right; integrated with ease, punchy and dynamic in the delivery of the bass register and rich and detailed across the midrange to the high frequencies which float effortlessly from the crown jewel of the Geometry Series, the Semisphere Silk-Carbon Hybrid Dome Technology Tweeter.

The new Discovery II will perhaps be familiar to owners and long-term admirers of the brand, replacing as it does the award-winning Odyssey Series design that precedes it. The original design won ‘Reference Loudspeaker’ in What HiFi? Magazine over two consecutive years in 2004 and 2005, along with a clutch of other awards including the ‘Stereo Sound Japan – Component of the Year’.

A.C.T. One Evolution Floor Standing Loudspeaker
Wilson Benesch - A.C.T. One Evolution - Floorstanding - Loudspeaker - Carbon Fibre Composite - Bristol - Sound & Vision - 2016 The name A.C.T. is an acronym for ‘Advanced Composite Technology’ – it is a reference to the carbon composite technologies upon which the Wilson Benesch brand was founded and subsequently became synonymous with. The A.C.T. acronym was used when naming the company’s first loudspeaker, the A.C.T. One, in 1991. The name was subsequently used for successive designs in the loudspeaker line; A.C.T. Two, A.C.T. and A.C.T. C60; along with the company’s range of tonearms which employ carbon fibre composite technologies.

Thus the A.C.T. One Evolution is a design born from impeccable heritage and the latest loudspeaker that has evolved from an iterative design process. The A.C.T. One Evolution features cutting edge Geometry Series drive technology, with the Troika System, first developed for the Cardinal flagship, reappearing in the latest floorstander in the series. The Troika sees an upper midrange and a lower midrange/bass drive unit delpyed either side of the Semisphere Tweeter. The drive units served have a stripped back crossover, reducing all components in the signal path to a minimum, with their output dictated by the optimised specification to which Wilson Benesch have built that drive unit. The combination of topology, highly refined build and proximity of all drive units results in something quite spectacular, with the A.C.T. One Evolution delivering a wide open, expansive and natural soundstage. The dynamic kick in the bass register is generated by the dedicated bass drive unit which has a capacious internal air volume to energise the driver.

the carbon fibre monocoque design found in the original A.C.T. One is still a vital part of the new loudspeaker’s development. It means that the loudspeaker can be completely unbraced internally, and yet retain the level of stiffness required of a loudspeaker at this level. And that means the internal air volume of the cabinet is far larger than most loudspeakers of the A.C.T. One Evolution’s footprint, which spells deceptive amounts of bass for the size of the speaker.

CH Precision P1 Phono Stage
Wilson Benesch - CH Precision - P1 Phono Stage - Bristol - Sound & Vision - 2016
Swiss high-end manufacturer CH Precision return again this year. As the exclusive UK importer, Wilson Benesch will showcase CH Precision electronics through the A.C.T. One Evolution loudspeakers. The incredible A1 Power Amplifier will be joined this year by a C1 D/A Controller providing digital streamed content, along with the very latest product in the Swiss marque, the P1 Phono Stage.

The P1 shares the high-tech design, fully balanced circuitry and multi-level menu-driven setup and control options of the CH Precision ‘Series-1’. In the rarefied environment that is high-end audio, the P1 sets itself apart from other designs with a number of innovative features. It has three dedicated inputs, which are all independently configurable and adjustable for gain. Two are current-driven MC inputs optimised for low-output cartridges, while the third is voltage-driven and switchable between MM and MC. The MC inputs use DSP circuitry and a supplied test disc to examine the profile of the incoming signal and then modify a fixed resistor to set the impedance for the flattest response, which can in turn be tweaked manually. Another stand out design feature is the ability to add an optional module, allowing you to switch between standard RIAA/extended RIAA EQ curves and those for EMI, Columbia, Decca and Teldec.

Audio Alchemy
Wilson Benesch - Audio Alchemy - DDP-1 Preamp DAC - Bristol - Sound & Vision - 2016
Audio Alchemy is a company reborn. The original Audio Alchemy pioneered affordable standalone digital-to-analog converters in the late 1980s. It sold more than 100,000 audio products, and the technologies it developed for jitter control, resolution enhancement and high-resolution analog filtering are still the solutions of choice in the audio industry.

The new Audio Alchemy, launched in 2014, is headed by original co-founder Peter Madnick and taps the talents of many of the original engineers responsible for the Audio Alchemy products of the 1980s and ’90s. The products are manufactured in the same Southern California facility with the same ethos: superior technology at reasonable prices.

Making its ‘Sound & Vision’ debut courtesy of UK importer Symmetry. Audio Alchemy will arrive with a magical system consisting of 4 x DPA-1M Monoblock hybrid digital power amplifiers running the Discovery II loudspeakers with a dedicated amplifier for each Isobaric Drive System and each midrange – tweeter pair. Up front will be the DDP-1 digital decoding preamp/DAC with a PS-5 power supply upgrade, along with the DMP-1 digital music streamer/DAC.

If Audio Alchemy’s design team was seeking that elusive ‘analogue feel’ for the sound of its DAC/preamp then it’s certainly hit the mark … tremendous value for listeners seeking fine audio on a sensible budget.

DS Audio DS-W1 “Nightrider” Optical Cartridge
Wilson Benesch - DS Audio - DS-W1 - Nightrider - Optical Cartridge - Bristol - Sound & Vision - 2016
DS Audio’s DS-W1 “Nightrider” Optical Cartridge probably requires little in the way of an introduction. It has captured the imagination of the analogue fraternity for some time now and is one of those products which redefines a sector of the market and a whole new category in the process. And rightly so, the DS-Audio is the world’s first Optical Cartridge.

The design is based around a pure analogue contact system employing a conventional stylus and cantilever, but replacing the traditional electromagnetic coil and magnet system with an LED to detect the vibration in the stylus caused by the grooves in the record. It is a revolutionary system that completely eliminates the electromagnetic frictional force that is unavoidable in all MM and MC cartridge designs.

The DS-W1 “Nightrider” cartridge uses state-of-the-art technology developed by Japanese photo-optics specialist Digital Stream Corporation, the co-creators, along with Microsoft, of the optical mouse.

Wilson Benesch will partner the DS-W1 with our A.C.T. 25 Tonearm mounted on the Circle 25 Turntable. Given the absence of heavy magnets and coils behind the stylus/cantilever, the “Nightrider is a spectacularly lightweight system at 6.5g. Placed on the end of the carbon fibre composite A.C.T. 25 Tonearm, it is an elegant, high-technology system.

This is unquestionably on of the shows, “Not to be missed” demonstrations!!
