Los Angeles Audio Show Report

Wilson Benesch - Resolution - Loudspeaker -
R1 HIFI Rack - Los Angeles Audio Show - 2017

Just 12-short days after the phenomenally successful double room global launch of the Resolution loudspeaker in Munich, Wilson Benesch made the leap from the Atlantic ocean to the shores of the Pacific ocean in California to join official US importer Aaudio Imports for the USA Premiere.

With both a Silk Black and a High Gloss – Silverstone P1 Coloured Carbon Fibre finish on display in Munich, the LAAS presented an opportunity to see another finish. Here the Resolution appeared with Ebonised Walnut Gloss, just one of Wilson Benesch’s nine bespoke natural wood finishes available. And with the system constructed by the entrance wall, it presented show guests the opportunity to walk into the room and observe its full architecture in all its glory.

Stage III Cables - USA - Los Angeles Audio Show - 2017

The Resolution loudspeakers were partnered with, the Ypsilon Aelius II Monoblocks, VPS-100 Phono Stage, PST-100 Pre-Amplifier, with all system cabling completed using the impressive hand built Stage III cabling from Portland USA. Finishing the system in style was the R1 HIFI Racks and the new R1 Carbon Shelf making it a setup to behold. But how did it sound?

“Aaudio Imports demonstrated a superb system of Ypsilon electronics from Greece. The PST0199 Mk.II tube preamp drove a pair of Aelius II monoblocks, fronted by Ypsilon’s VPS-100 tube phono stage and MC26L step-up transformer. I had never looked at the Ypsilon components up-close, but they are extraordinarily built. The whole package sounded superb driving the remarkable new Wilson Benesch Resolution loudspeaker.

Robert Harley, The Absolute Sound

“…the new Wilson Benesch Resolution loudspeakers joined Ypsilon electronics, a Thales/Ikeda turntable and Stage III cabling in attracting a great deal of attention. This configuration, put together by AAImports, was most successful on the Reference Recordings LP of Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, where the system did the best job of conveying the air around the big bass drum that I’ve ever experienced.

Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile

But the new Resolution loudspeaker didn’t just capture the attention of the press in LA. The new loudspeaker also captured the attention of the independent show panel who were touring the exhibition for the first two days of the show. And by Saturday late afternoon, we were delighted to learn that Wilson Benesch had been awarded ‘Best Loudspeaker’ at the show by the Los Angeles Audio Show and Los Angeles and Orange County Audiophile Society. On Saturday evening following the show, Aaudio Imports and Wilson Benesch were delighted and honoured to collect an award and this certificate.

And Orange County Audiophile Society - HIFI

Wilson Benesch are naturally thrilled with the outcomes of the Resolution USA Premiere. The brand is being widely recognised by press and clients alike in the USA. Picking up another award in Los Angeles has been a real honour.

We would like to make our personal thanks to Marine Presson and her show team for putting together such an excellent event in Los Angeles. And we would like to make a personal thanks to our partners in the USA, Aaudio Imports for bringing together a set of products with wonderful synergy to make this system possible.

Wilson Benesch will return in Anaheim, for ‘T.H.E. Show’ in September and again for ‘The Rocky Mountain Audio Fest’ in October. See you all then!

Review: Blue Marvel, The Discovery II P1, Hifi & Records

Wilfried Kress - Discovery II - Loudspeaker -
 P1 - Coloured Carbon Fibre - British - Engineering - Innovation

“The Blue Marvel” is how Hifi & Records editor Wilfried Kress decided to title his World Premiere review of the Discovery II P1.

It has been many years since the first Discovery passed beneath Herr Kress’s laboratory lens. Discovery II has now replaced what was one of the most novel designs ever created and it remains unique. 15-years later, Discovery II must now justify itself and demonstrate why this product is worthy of its name. Kress not only provides a review, he attempts to provide you with an insight into the philosophy of loudspeaker design. An insight that could lay claim to having not only seen it all, but probably measured it as well! Kress ruthlessly distills the essence of what Wilson Benesch has sought to create after a life times dedication and consistent effort by its owners.

“Wilson Benesch’s first loudspeaker, the ACT One from 1994, was ahead of its time. A picture-perfect 2.5-way column whose carbon fibre sidewalls were tapering backward – the world had never seen something like this before… to me this remained the epitome of a Wilson Benesch until that milestone by the name of Discovery came out in 2001…

From the outset Kress states, “High-end can only try to impart a credible illusion; more is not achievable in a small living-room, period”, He then goes on to describe the “conceptual decisions” that a loudspeaker designer faces in drive unit design and the critical importance of integration between these drive units. Before acknowledging that low-end extension in the bass is the most difficult part of the harmonic spectrum to get right. Where Kress perceives three parameters that require balance: bandwidth, sensitivity and cabinet volume.

“a truly deep bass and high maximum sound pressure level require larger cabinets and a greater diaphragm surface. And so the trouble begins with that >>boxy sound<<"... The latter is fighting an almost forlorn battle with two problem fields. The first are the resonating cabinets themselves, which in spite of super thick walls and high masses can never be controlled perfectly. The second are the sound portions radiated backward into the interior of the cabinet, which can never be fully absorbed, either, and which interfere with the music signal if they get out. And this they do, because the (in this respect) weakest spots of even the most massive cabinets are the often paper-thin diaphragms themselves.

It is a refreshing observation and one that illuminates one of the core philosophies that remains at the core of the design and development team at Wilson Benesch. From the outset, Wilson Benesch have maintained relatively small drive unit designs at the heart of relatively compact loudspeaker cabinet. Instead Wilson Benesch has consistently developed, dynamic, fast and thus well integrated drive technologies, namely the Tactic drive unit that was at the heart of the Odyssey Range (now the Square Series II) and the Tactic II drive unit that is now at the heart of the Geometry Series. And in turn compact loudspeaker cabinets, constructed from carbon fibre composites, using curved geometries to overcome as much as possible the cabinet resonances that Kress refers to, whilst also minimising the window through which sound inside the cabinet can escape through.

Indeed, the Discovery design embodies so much of the design ethos of Wilson Benesch. As Kress goes on to illuminate when discussing the Isobaric Drive System that forms the heart of the Discoveries low frequency reproduction.

Its unique purity (one again the cabinet!), its way to paint fine details without ever drifting off into clinical analysis, its credible room imaging command our due respect, but what really matters: the Discovery II makes me forget so effortlessly that I’m listening to two speakers… the second Discovery is yet again a milestone.

Readers will have to listen for themselves. But we are delighted with Kress’ review of the Discovery II. We would like to extend our gratitude to Wilfried Kress, Iris Kress, Olaf Sturm and all the Hifi & Records team. We would also like to make a personal thank you to our German import partners IBEX Audio.

The P1 Collection: A Revolution in Carbon Fibre

As the Audiophile Editor of the Stereoplay in the nineties, Wilfried Kress established a reputation that challenged any designer to prove through objective facts and measurements any claims being made of their product.

A fierce devotee of science and accuracy many feared his gaze. These principles continue today, but not under any auspices, because Kress created his own magazine 20 years ago, which today can still be seen, to take a huge amount of time and care to measure and analyse all the products that pass under its roof.

Hi fi & Records is a visually stunning understated statement of fidelity and clarity of thought.

Just 12-days following this weekends Resolution loudspeaker Global Premiere at the Munich HIGH END, Wilson Benesch are delighted to share confirm that the USA Premiere for the the new floorstanding loudspeaker will take place at the inaugural Los Angeles Audio Show.

The new Los Angeles show promises to be an exciting new event in the high end audio calendar, located on the West coast of the USA in the sunshine state of California. And after the relaunch of Wilson Benesch in the USA with Aaudio Imports in September 2016, Wilson Benesch has been firmly thrust back into the spotlight in the USA. In October, Aaudio Imports debuted the A.C.T. One Evolution P1 at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in a new ‘Ettore’ Blue coloured carbon fibre that was unveiled especially for the show in Denver. In November 2016, Wilson Benesch collected a CES Innovation Award for the design, which was in turn presented at the CES International Exhibition in January 2017. Last week, the Resolution loudspeaker made its global premiere at the Munich HIGH END, featuring as a ‘Best of’ in Jonathan Valin’s post show report,

On a roll lately, Wilson Benesch was also demo’ing in two rooms, only in this case it was debuting the same speaker in each: the $70k Resolution, a seven-driver three-way (four clamshell-mounted Tactic II woofers, two Tactic II midranges, and a single silk-dome/carbon-fiber tweeter in a monocoque carbon-fiber-composite cabinet). In the first room the Resolution was paired with CH Precision electronics and sources, and the sound was stat-like in its clarity and absence of enclosure coloration (despite severe bleed-through from a neighboring cubicle and a bit of room-induced bass boom). But it was in the second room, where the speaker was driven by Ypsilon electronics and sourced by a Dohmann Helix turntable, that the Resolution really shone. The sound was considerably fuller and more beautiful than in the CH room, with warmer, richer, more lifelike vocal timbre on my Johnny Hartman LP and well defined standup bass. The piano may not have been as crisp and ivory-like on top as it was in the CH room, but Hartmann sounded more like the silky baritone that he was. Indeed, the presentation was reminiscent of the Rockport Cygnus in the Soulution room—beautiful in color, with superior pace and definition in the low end. Wilson Benesch makes swell loudspeakers.

the Ypsilon Phaethon integrated amp and the Wilson Benesch A.C.T. One Evolution loudspeakers plus Torus Infrasonic Generator were all operating in that same exclusive, ultra-fidelity realm. It was intoxicating. The music was present, not because of its tangible weight or body, but because of its extreme, detailed vividness

Herb Reichert, Stereophile Magazine – Rocky Mountain Show Report, USA

Sharing common drive technologies with the A.C.T. One Evolution and Discovery II, along with the Troika System found in the A.C.T. and the Isobaric Drive System found in the Discovery II, the Resolution will have that familiar Wilson Benesch sound enjoyed by so many at the exhibitions in the past few months.
